Milestones

Just throwing it out here, would it make sense to create some visible milestones for this project? Not knowing R I am not entirely certain what the current status of compatibility is with SpatialData and it might help with getting people (including me) involved in implementing small subtasks.

Note that this is not for pushing for a timeline, purely for quick overview of tasks that could be taken on by someone.

Thanks a lot for the concept Wouter! I think we should do this. It would be good to have a view into a milestone list for python SpatialData that we might emulate. I started a very elementary slide set that shows aspects of current state but actual next steps and longer-term goals need to be articulated.

Ok, I will create a list of methods that are implemented int he SpatialData API. I think it would be good here and there to phrase it with some example data and what should be possible in addition to pure bullet points.

It could be that some of the functionalities are not provided by SpatialData directly but rather indirectly because of using existing libraries for example when it comes to geospatial operations that are provided by geopandas. This would perhaps be a bit more difficult.

Perhaps we should look into something like the way OME-NGFF tools is doing it (https://ome.github.io/ome-ngff-tools/). So rather than having a document that is milestone specific for a language, have a document with overall components / milestones for the framework and indicate in which language it is supported / not yet supported. This would also mean that it is directly visible for the user what is supported in what language and we could then also decide for a priority in both languages (in case something is already implemented in R or Python and would require a large amount of effort to implement in the other language we might refer users to switch to the language in which it is implemented. The reference to the ome.github.io is nice, and I would be happy to work on a matrix of this sort. Is there a feature list for SpatialData/python that could be a catalyst? Also I can't understand the (i) symbols in the matrix, they aren't live links to doc?

They indicate locations where if you hover over you get a tooltip with the info.
Regarding the feature list, I am working on it:)

OK, it takes a little while for the tooltip text to appear! Is the source code for that page easy to find? I don't know what repo it is associated with.
