For years, rsync output gets stuck on some weird characters

So I have been having this for years. I'm moving/backing up some old storage files between hard drives locally, and then rsync output during the copy just gets stuck at one point. It's always at the same file. There are some gibberish characters in the file folder name, I think it's Chinese characters, but maybe traditional Chinese because some other Chinese characters are displayed fine. This has happened on various terminals and Desktop Environments, on Linux and on FreeBSD.

The copy does continue normally in the background until completion, it's just the display is stuck. I attach the screenshot of where it gets stuck...

Ok, it does get stuck at other weird character paths too, but you get the idea.

Would you please paste the file path here, beginning from the first place with foreign characters?

Actually, I read further (sorry, I wrote initially without understanding your message in full) and now I suspect the file path may contain a "control character" that keeps getting interpreted (instead of simply printed) by all those terminals you mentioned.

We can check that by trying to list the files in the directory in question:

$ cd "elementary/elementary_listening/listening elem audio"   # Move to dir "listening elem audio".
$ find "<the directory with the file that starts the freeze>" # List files in the dir, along with their paths.

If the display "freezes" during this process like you mentioned, rsync probably has nothing to do with this issue.

If the display does not freeze, we can investigate further.
