How we work and what we learn at CYF

1. Prep, backlogs, day plans, and success pages (how we organise learning)

At CYF, we learn like a real tech team:

• Prep: This is the learning you do before class. It might be videos, reading, or small exercises. Prep ensures everyone arrives with the same basic understanding so we can use class time effectively.
• Backlog: This is a list of tasks or goals we want to complete (similar to how software teams plan work). It helps us prioritise what matters most.
• Day plan: This is the plan for a specific session—what we’ll work on, in what order, and how much time we’ll spend. It keeps the group focused and organised.
• Success page: This is where we reflect on what “success” looks like and what we’ve achieved. It helps us track progress, build confidence, and identify what to improve next.

Together, these tools help us learn independently, collaborate effectively, and stay accountable.

2. Tracking changes to code with Git and GitHub
   When we write code, it changes constantly. Git is a tool that tracks those changes over time, like a detailed history of your work.

• You can see what changed, when, and why.
• You can safely experiment and go back to an earlier version if something breaks.

GitHub is an online platform where Git projects live:

• It allows collaboration with others.
• It’s where employers can see how you work.
• It’s essential for real-world software development.

3. Validating data with HTML forms
   When users enter data into a website (like a sign-up form), we must make sure the data is correct.

• HTML form validation helps ensure required fields are filled in.
• It checks things like email format, passwords, or number ranges before data is submitted.
• This improves user experience and prevents bad or incomplete data from being stored.

4. Analysing structured data with SQL in a spreadsheet

Data is often stored in structured tables (rows and columns).
SQL (Structured Query Language) lets us ask questions like:
-“Which records match this condition?”
-“What is the total, average, or maximum value?”

• Using SQL inside a spreadsheet combines the power of databases with familiar tools.
• This skill is useful for analysing real-world data quickly and accurately.

5. Planning your new life as a tech professional

CYF isn’t just about learning technical skills, it’s about changing your career.

• You learn how to manage time, plan work, and collaborate like a professional.
• You build habits such as continuous learning, reflection, and problem-solving.
• You prepare for real jobs by developing technical skills and professional behaviours.
• You create a roadmap for your future in tech, including job searching, networking, and growth.
  In short, CYF teaches you how to learn, how to work, and how to think like a tech professional, using real tools and real practices from the industry.
