HDR UK and ELIXIR-UK are set to host their first joint hackathon. This in-person event will bring together professionals across the UK to collaborate on innovative solutions to shared technical challenges in the health data and life sciences sectors.
9+
10+
The hackathon promises three days of creativity and collaboration, where participants can engage in intensive brainstorming, hands-on coding, and networking. Projects will focus on advancing open-source infrastructure for data integration and analysis, aligning with the missions of [HDR UK](https://www.hdruk.ac.uk/about-us/our-strategy/) and [ELIXIR-UK](https://elixiruknode.org/what-we-do/).
11+
12+
The event is taking place **12-14 February 2025** and welcomes a diverse range of participants, from researchers and technologists to strategic thinkers and early-career professionals. Project proposals are currently being accepted, with a submission deadline of September 27, 2024.
13+
14+
Each project proposal should include a detailed description of how it supports HDR UK or ELIXIR-UK’s strategic goals and technical priorities. The selected projects will be announced on October 18, 2024.
15+
16+
[Emily Jefferson](https://www.hdruk.ac.uk/people/emily-jefferson/), Chief Technical Officer at HDR UK, said:
17+
18+
> “Hosting our first hackathon in partnership with ELIXIR-UK is an exciting milestone for us, providing a unique opportunity to drive technical innovation and collaboration across the health data ecosystem. We look forward to seeing what creative outcomes emerge as we bring together and share our expertise to accelerate scientific discovery.”
19+
20+
The hackathon is designed to not only address pressing challenges but also to strengthen partnerships between technologists in the health informatics and bioinformatics fields.

Well done and congratulations to Aleksandra Nenadic, whose outstanding contributions to Teaching and Education in the Research Software Engineering community were recognised at [RSECon24](https://rsecon24.society-rse.org/) last month. Aleks is a Technical Training Manager at the eScience Lab, and has been a leading member of the [UK Carpentries community](https://carpentries.org/) for many years.
9+
10+
Aleks received a Training and Education Award as "an individual who is excelling at training and education, whether that is delivering training courses or writing the material."

Aravindhan Rajasekar has been nominated and selected for inclusion in this year's UK Government Transformation 100, an award recognising individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the transformation of public services. Over 1400 nominations were made, so to be named in the Top 100 is a significant achievement. Government Transformation 100 Awards are held annually by Government Transformation Magazine, with the support of an Advisory Board of senior central and local UK government executives.
9+
10+
Aravindhan has held several posts in the civil service, including the Cabinet Office, and currently works in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Aravindhan has recently started a part-time PhD with Carole Goble and Stian Soiland-Reyes, looking at digital transformation in the UK’s public health sector to enable federated analysis across multiple secure data environments in the NHS, clinics and research labs, and other public sector data custodians. This is funded as part of Health Data Research UK (HDR-UK Federated Analytics workstream). Manchester are partners and co-lead this programme.

In November 2024, the eScience Lab returned to the annual [ELIXIR BioHackathon Europe](https://biohackathon-europe.org/) event, this time on the outskirts of Barcelona, Spain. Colleagues joined the over 300 participants from the life sciences research community to address crucial challenges in bioinformatics.
9+
10+
Two featured projects were co-led by the eScience Lab:
11+
12+
- [BioSchemas for mortals](https://github.com/elixir-europe/biohackathon-projects-2024/blob/main/10.md) – Nick Juty and Phil Reed, to simplify Bioschemas and increase accessibility for diverse user groups. They were joined by Munazah Andrabi and Finn Bacall.
13+
- [Creating user benefit from ARC-ISA RO-Crate machine-actionability](https://github.com/elixir-europe/biohackathon-projects-2024/blob/main/19.md) – Eli Chadwick developing tools for automated, machine-actionable data sharing.

We are delighted to share the news that eScience Lab co-lead Stian Soiland-Reyes successfully [defended](https://www.uva.nl/en/content/events/2025/01/fair-research-objects-and-computational-workflows-a-linked-data-approach.html) his PhD dissertation '[FAIR Research Objects and Computational Workflows – A Linked Data Approach](https://s11.no/2023/phd/)' at the University of Amsterdam.
9+
10+
His award comes after many years of publishing research at The University of Manchester, on reproducibility, provenance and metadata to improve FAIR sharing of open research data and computational workflows, within [ELIXIR Europe](/projects/elixir/), European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) projects and the workflow repository [WorkflowHub.eu](/products/workflowhub/), as well as building FAIR approaches for high-performance compute (HPC) environments and scholarly Research Objects.
