Timeout and no cache busting on a big channel

We have rocket cache, and it works well on most of our site, but we have issues on our courses channels This is a big channel with over 60 fields which I think is the root of the problem.
If we choose update on save - Yes -- When we save the entry it times out after around 60 secs, if you return to it the entry has been updated but the cache hasn't busted.
If we choose update on save - No -- The entry saves as normal with no timeout be the cache doesn't bust. I'm happy to set it as no and let the cache be rebuilt by the next visitor as the pages are pretty quick but it's a pain having to bust the entire cache to get those changes to appear. The rest of my channels work as expected so I reckon the issue is related to the channel size

There isn't much that can be done about the timeouts, just switch to the 'No' option.

I've tested and the automatic clearing of cache on save is working ok with 2.1.5, can you offer any more information that might help me to recreate the issue? Number of fields shouldn't have an effect as it works purely on the URL using the channel entry. Do you have other addons installed?
