Please help getting variable explorer to work

I have looked online for help understanding this issue, but I can't find anything in threads. Why can't I get the variable explorer to pop up/fill out after I run a .py file? To be clear, I run the file and the Python window comes up for user input/prints/etc. (when a file is run) but nothing happens in the window.

I've moved on from using the Atom text editor, and am no longer maintaining this project.

For any nteract folks reading this issue tracker: I'm happy to transfer this repository and/or the atom package name to the nteract org, if at any point the nteract org wants to do anything with this extension or the hydrogen-python name.
