How do Codex developers get Codex to understand that it is Codex?

I've been tinkering in the Codex codebase, using Codex of course, and I've found that I have trouble getting it to understand that it is the result of the code that it's looking at.

So it will say things like "to verify this, get codex to run the command X" and I have to say "no dude, you are Codex, run it and tell me what you see".

So I'm wondering, is there some magic incantation that makes it click for the model?

(BTW yes I'm aware I'm mixing the concepts of model, agent, harness, etc, but you know what I mean).
