Updating static binary and deb packages to 8.5

The five last extensions that aren't compatible with php 8.5 on their latest (alpha/beta) tarball are:

        - 'pdo_sqlsrv:https://github.com/stancl/msphpsql/archive/refs/heads/push-posxmnwpksqv.tar.gz'
        - 'swoole:https://github.com/swoole/swoole-src/archive/refs/heads/master.tar.gz'
        - 'amqp:https://github.com/php-amqp/php-amqp/archive/refs/pull/595/merge.tar.gz'
        - 'xdebug:https://github.com/xdebug/xdebug/archive/refs/tags/3.5.0alpha3.tar.gz'

And memcache, which doesn't have a working pull request yet and seems largely unmaintained.

Xdebug will see a release soon-ish. Swoole is also actively maintained and based on their previous schedule, we'll get a 6.2 rc1 release in this month, a stable release by next year. pdo_sqlsrv and amqp seem barely maintained, so it will likely take a long, long time.

When do you all think we should switch to php 8.5? After xdebug and swoole pushed a stable release or go for it now?@php/frankenphp-collaborators

At least once swoole and xdebug are available. For different reasons. Swoole for optane in the laravel ecosystem and xdebug because ... debugging stuff.

Are there stats somewhere on how commonly plugins like pdo_sqlsrv are? Probably makes sense to define a minimum % at which support in the pre compiled binary is not guaranteed

Pecl has download stats I think. Packagist too, but the extension isn't even there and pecl is still too prevalent.

Most people source it from their package providers though, so I doubt we'd get anything from Canonical or RedHat.

@php/frankenphp-collaborators I have apk support and versioned packages more or less working now. But I'm not quite sure which way to go.

Options:
a) versioned repositories, non-versioned binaries/folders.

advantages:

• same names for packages: apt install php-zts, apk add php-zts, etc.
• same folder structure: /usr/bin/frankenphp, /usr/bin/php-zts
• in other words, easy config. each system has the same user, the same folder structure, the same package names
• default on RHEL

disadvantages:

• only one version (8.3, 8.4, 8.5) in one repository, if a user wants to switch, they need to adjust /etc/apt/sources.list.d/static-php.list or /etc/apk/repositories. RHEL has module streams, so there one repository provides all versions.
• upgrading is easy (8.3->8.4), downgrading requires full uninstall of all 8.4 packages before (except RHEL does it automatically)
• only one version can be installed at a time

b) one repository, versioned binaries/folders

advantages:

• user adds one repository and is done
• can install multiple versions at the same time (php-zts84, php-zts85)
• • default on alpine and debian (php84 alpine, php8.5 debian)

disadvantages:

• every system uses different systems for versioning... rhel barely advertises one.
• deb: php-zts8.5, apk: php-zts85, rhel: php85-php-zts
• different file paths, our config will have to list /usr/lib/php-zts8.5 for debian 8.5, /usr/lib/php-zts84 for alpine (no dot). /opt/rh for rhel
• different service names and binaries

I'd prefer a) just for simplicity. Not sure how common multiple version installations are, but it would also be possible to have a separate frankenphp-multi repo or so later on.

I'm thinking the same way, especially in regards to our documentation. But I'm a dnf user where that's the default, so I can't trust myself to be unbiased here.

Testing versioned alpine repository will be online starting 21.12.2025 (x86_64 only, do not expect it to stay up!):

Debian packages would be versioned similarly, except with php-zts8.5 (with a dot between major and minor version).
