Is <HeatmapLayer /> compatible with <VectorSource />

I used HeatmapLayer successfully with a < ShapeSource />

however when trying to use it with < VectorSource/> it doesn't seem to work. It just paints the whole screen with the heatmapColour i set for density score of 0.
I confirmed that the 3rd party VectorSource url I'm using returns Point data by rendering a <CircleLayer dots

Which leads me to assume that HeatmapLayer isn't compatible with VectorSource but I'm unable to confirm looking through all the available documentation.
If anyone has an example or can confirm if it works or not that would be great!
