Introduction and pre-requisites.

This tutorial should bring you up to speed to take your place in a team of coders, or just to use revisions and backups on your own code. We will cover the basics up to the point where you can fly on your own, and learn by yourselves.

What is ...?

To even out the field, let's start with a set of general questions:

  1. What is a Version Control System (VCS)?
  2. Are you familiar with some?
  3. What is a Distributed Version Control System (DVCS)?
  4. What is git?

(here give some answers to the questions, on an other page )

Installation

The official place is http://git-scm.com/downloads

To sum it up:

  1. Linux: the best is always to use your package management system (yum, apt), and not worry about anything.
  2. Mac: a dmg can be downloaded directly: http://git-scm.com/download/mac
  3. Windows: an executable installer is also there: http://git-scm.com/download/win. however the configuration will be a bit puzzling for pure windows users. See: Windows installation comments
