MATLAB R2025a introduced changes to the Python–MATLAB communication rules.
To accommodate this, this PR explicitly specifies Python types for several variables to maintain compatibility.

Hey @neuroiwm - thanks for the update, just to check, should these updates also work with older version of Matlab, as in is this change likely to induce any backwards compatibility issues whereby it no longer works with previous versions? I don't have Matlab to check. I don't want to break things for any other users on older versions, but if it doesn't do so, I'm happy to merge this in.

Thank you for your response!
Although I only tested this with MATLAB R2024b and Python 3.12.9, the updated version also works with older MATLAB releases.
