Ansible 2.20 has deprecated the use of Ansible facts as variables. For
example, ansible_distribution is now deprecated in favor of
ansible_facts["distribution"]. This is due to making the default
setting INJECT_FACTS_AS_VARS=false. For now, this will create WARNING
messages, but in Ansible 2.24 it will be an error.

See https://docs.ansible.com/projects/ansible/latest/porting_guides/porting_guide_core_2.20.html#inject-facts-as-vars

Summary by Sourcery

Update Ansible role and tests to use ansible_facts-based lookups instead of deprecated fact variables for distribution detection and related logic.

Enhancements:

  • Replace deprecated distribution-related Ansible fact variables with ansible_facts lookups in role conditionals and variables.
  • Align test playbooks and helper variables with the ansible_facts-based convention for distro and version handling.
  • Adjust README-ostree documentation to describe DISTRO-VERSION in terms of ansible_facts keys rather than legacy variables.

Reviewer's guide (collapsed on small PRs)

Reviewer's Guide

Refactors Ansible variable usage to rely on the ansible_facts dict instead of implicit fact variables, updating task conditions, test var files, and README documentation to be compatible with INJECT_FACTS_AS_VARS=false in Ansible 2.20+.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Replace deprecated implicit Ansible fact variables with explicit ansible_facts lookups across tests and vars files for distribution-related logic.
  • Update comments and example templating in include-vars tests to use ansible_facts['distribution'], ansible_facts['distribution_version'], ansible_facts['distribution_major_version'], and ansible_facts['os_family']
  • Switch kernel settings test filenames to interpolate ansible_facts['distribution'] and ansible_facts['distribution_major_version'] instead of ansible_distribution* variables
  • Change distro classification vars to check membership against ansible_facts['distribution'] instead of ansible_distribution
tests/tests_include_vars_from_parent.yml
tests/tasks/assert_kernel_settings.yml
tests/vars/rh_distros_vars.yml
vars/main.yml
Align documentation and test conditions with the new ansible_facts-based access pattern.
  • Update README-ostree distro/version documentation examples to reference ansible_facts['distribution'] and ansible_facts['distribution_version']
  • Modify a simple settings test when-condition to compare ansible_facts['distribution'] to 'Fedora'
