This software does not have a fancy name other than httpd.

It is often referred to as OpenHTTPD because there's a tradition in OpenBSD to prepend project names with Open. Everyone is free to call it this way, and it will probably make sense for many users, but it is not the official name.

It must not be confused with openhttpd.net which was an older attempt (or bad pun) by unknown people to create a web server that is somehow related to OpenBSD.

It is not related to the Apache HTTP Server Project. The term httpd was traditionally used by Apache, even in OpenBSD, but OpenBSD removed its Apache httpd and replaced it with nginx. nginx was later replaced with the new httpd; written from scratch and based on relayd.

Possible names

  • OpenBSD httpd
  • bsd.plumbing web server
  • relayd's httpd
  • OpenBSD's new httpd
